TLDR – Is Steve Chou Worth Your Money?
Steve is in the e-commerce business. You might have seen his resources before, or heard his My Wife Quit Her Job podcast. This guy seems to know his stuff…
But should spend money on his courses? Can Steve help you achieve financial freedom?
Maybe, but it’s not likely. The “information for free elsewhere” thing is a problem – you might just end up paying for info you can find on other websites without paying for it.
It’s a bit like trying to perfect the recipe for strawberry cheesecake. You start digging online and find a great recipe book for like $50… perfect. But when you tell your friend about it, she hits you with a “Oh, I could have given you my grandma’s old recipe… and there’s a bunch of YouTube videos too!”… All of a sudden, those 50 bucks don’t feel quite so well spent.
But let’s say Steve helps you build your e-commerce business. Can you turn this online store website into a successful business? Again… it’s a maybe, maybe not.
The ecommerce store and dropshipping business model has changed. These days, the market is packed with competitors, and you’ll be battling it out with these rivals for shrinking profits.
You’re also not in control – if you take the Amazon FBA route, then you better abide by Amazon’s strict guidelines or find yourself locked out of the market. So we’ve learned a bit about what Steve and his courses are all about. Now it’s time to take a step back and get the bigger picture.
The My Wife Quit Her Job Business Model
It’s worth noting that MWQHJ is not the name of this course. It’s just Steve’s online selling education brand.
With the Profitable Online Store course and the Profitable Audience course, we’re talking about the e-commerce and dropshipping model.
It’s pretty straightforward. You create a website online, source products from suppliers, and sell them to the customer. You might handle the products and shipping yourself, or you might let the supplier do the shipping to the customer themselves. With dropshipping, the supplier does this, you’ll just be in the middle.
Before you dive in head first with Steve’s course, here are a few things to keep in mind.
- The ‘dropship’ may have already sailed – The money in the market is shared between established sellers. 81% of the world’s top dropshipping stores are here in the US, so you’ve got your work cut out to make a mark. Some stores are clearing $50k a month, but 98.5% are nowhere near this.
- Dropshippers and ecommerce sellers are leaving a lot of things to chance – Online selling is fraught with risk. 84% of sellers say the biggest problem they face is finding a reliable supplier, and then there are customer complaints, selling platform regulations, and ad platform rules to consider. It’s all a bit of a house of cards that could come tumbling down.
- There are ongoing costs to worry about – You’ll get lifetime access to Steve’s courses, but you’ll still need to pay for other things moving forward. Web hosting, paid advertising, and domains aren’t free, and you’ll need to save money on these aspects as you work to maximize profit.

How are Steve’s Online Business Programs Different?
How does Steve stack up against the rest? Well, the J Rich course focuses more on dropshipping. With Steve, you get a bit more… dropshipping, as well as traditional ecommerce. Ok, so this is not so much more, but you do at least get some extra skills.
It’s more similar to something like the eCommerce Empire Builders program, although you won’t get the referral bonus that eEB offers. You also do get more content with Steve though, and he updates this content more often.

So we know that the Profitable Online Store course is run by a guy called Steve, but we need a bit more info here. Who is Steve exactly, and what’s his background?
Steve Chou hails from Santa Clara in the California Bay Area. His educational and professional background is impressive – he’s a graduate of Stanford University and holds an electrical engineering degree. This qualification took him to Tensilica, where he worked as a manager for the company’s development systems. However, it was e-commerce where Steve really made his name.
Since 2007, he’s been running his own e-commerce site, known as Bumblebee Linens. This is where he sells his own products to customers around the country. As you might have worked out from the name of his blog and podcast, the e-commerce business is a family affair for the Chous. The family’s kids sell their own clothing on the Kid In Charge site, and his wife Jen is also heavily involved in the business.
Back in 2016, he launched Sellers Summit, an online e-commerce events company. He also does affiliate marketing for a host of different software and digital tool companies. This is a man who knows all about income stream diversity.
With My Wife Quit Her Job, Steve runs a successful podcast and a profitable blog. Then there are the courses, which provide yet another source of income to this enterprising North Cal entrepreneur.
Is there a My Wife Quit Her Job Scam to Worry About?
Steve seems like a good guy. He’s upfront about pricing for his Profitable Online Store course and his other offerings. He’s not constantly offering dubious “limited time offers”, that scream “buy now to get the best price” but actually offer imaginary discounts.
He also provides a refund for anyone not happy with what they get. This might seem like a pretty low bar, but trust me… it’s better than some of the other gurus I’ve reviewed.
Some internet commenters have complained about his pushing links for some of the tools he’s an affiliate for. If you can see past this, though, the information is good and directly related to success in the world of e-commerce.
So no, I wouldn’t say there’s a scam going on here.
But does this mean you should grab that credit card and punch in your digits on Steve’s site? Let’s hold on just a minute.
Just because there’s no scam, doesn’t mean this is going to work for everyone. The ecommerce model is flawed… the glory years of the late 2010s are over. I think there are better models and courses, with more money potential, out there online.
My Personal Opinion on Steve and his Courses
So what do I think of Stanford electrical engineer degree grad Steve? Are the courses he’s selling worth buying?
Before I give you the big verdict, here’s what I’m looking for…
- Incredible coaching – You don’t just want an e-commerce store, you want to be learning real skills for the online business world.
- A big possibility for creating real wealth – You need a course that’s going to help you generate real money from your new business.
- The freedom to live your life on your own terms – Life and family always come first. You need to be free to live your best life.
Is My Wife Quit Her Job Your Key to Success with Your Own Business?
In a word… no.
But why? What leads me to this conclusion?
Firstly, Steve’s cool. I like Steve. Steve’s not the problem here. Actually, I don’t think Steve’s courses are the problem either, although not every commenter and reviewer agrees with me on that. I personally think Steve has achieved solid business success in the online selling world, and he has good information to give to would-be entrepreneurs.
Instead, I think the issue is the model. An online store just isn’t going to give you the success it might have done five or six years ago.
Here’s my quick summary of Steve’s online business courses…
- Steve’s business coaching is good, and he updates it regularly… which is a big plus. But some of it is just too basic, and lots of it is available elsewhere for free.
- Creating wealth is a big worry for me. I just don’t think a dropshipping or e-commerce course is the best idea in 2024. You might make your money back, but I think those dream profits are going to be hard to realize.
- Freedom and control are basically non-existent with e-commerce. Suppliers, customers, ad platforms, e-commerce platforms… all of these things can bring your business crashing down. And how is your family going to feel when you’re answering yet another customer email when you’re supposed to be enjoying a holiday together? Probably not great…
So there we have it. A good guy. A pretty good course. But a model that just leaves so much to be desired. If creating your dream life is the goal, it’s probably time to look elsewhere.
I actually think something like Digital Leasing is a way better bet.

The My Wife Quit Her Job Reviews Roundup – The Conclusion
So what’s the verdict – is the course “a go”, or “a no”?
I’d probably have to say it’s a no.
Steve gives some really good information… yes, you can find some of this info elsewhere online, but he does bring it all together in a bunch of well-structured courses. Also, he seems like a good dude, and he knows his stuff.
I just don’t think this is the time to be getting into e-commerce. A few years ago, maybe, but not now. It’s just so hard to be successful in a crowded market, and dealing with customers, suppliers, ad platforms, and shopping platforms is just so frustrating.
